On the 9th and 10th December of 2020, Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has successfully organized the Virtual International Conference on Marine Science and Aquaculture (vICOMSA) focusing on the theme "Sustainable Ocean for Sustainable Future". The ICOMSA is an annual conference organised by BMRI, however due to the pandemic, this conference was organised fully online. The virtual conference was a collaboration with other institutes namely Bandung Institute of Technology - Indonesia, Kindai University - Japan, National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) - Taiwan, National Univesrity of Singapore, Shantou Univesrity - China and Soka University - Japan.
One of the sessions during the seminar was called “Climate Change: Awareness, Adaptation and Mitigation”. Chaired by TS Associate Prof. TS Dr. Ejria Saleh, leader of Goal 4 of CTI, this session focused primarily on issues related to climate change. The speakers in this session were from local and international institution, government agency, and NGO. In this session, the shared the latest information on their research, new findings, and activities related to the theme of this session.
This session served as a platform for academia, government agencies, NGOs and private institutions to address the issues related to climate change and to provide updated information on the available scientific knowledge related to climate change. The objectives of the session were;
1. to provide updates on the latest knowledge of climate change; and
2. to inform the public of the steps taken or activities organized by stakeholders to address
climate change issues and climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Other than serving as a platform to share the latest information on research related to climate change, this session also acted as a platform for the public to ask questions on the related issue.
The conference was attended by a total of 284 participants consisting of 2 keynote speakers, 6 plenary speakers, 120 people, oral presenters, 64 poster presentations, and 73 observers.
