In conjunction with World Oceans Day (WOD) which was introduced by the United Nations (UN) in 2008, and celebrated around the world every June 8, Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) have been featuring a series of events to commemorate WOD since 2012. Coral Triangle Day (CTD) is also an annual event celebrated on June 9 with various activities that reflect the goals of Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI). Since 2014, UMS has celebrated WOD and CTD simultaneously on a national level. The celebration is known as Oceans Celebration and aimed to increase public awareness, provide opportunities as well as inspire the community and consumers for continuous efforts in the management of the ocean and its resources. This year’s Ocean Celebration was organised virtually due to Covid-19 pandemic and hence named Virtual Ocean Celebrations 2020.
Virtual Ocean Celebrations 2020 was organised by the BMRI in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Water Malaysia (KASA) and with support from various government agencies and NGOs in across Malaysia. The Virtual Ocean Celebration 2020 was launched by UMS Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin through Facebook live on June 8, 2020.
There was a total of 10 programs organised throughout the celebration from June 22 and July 2, 2020 which includes webinar, talks from experts, competitions as well as virtual tour of the BMRI Aquarium. This year’s Ocean Celebration provided a platform for programs to increase public awareness and provided opportunities to the public to be a part of the celebration.
